Can you do a day trip from Seattle to Mount Rainier?

Yes. The NPS puts Seattle to the Nisqually Entrance at about two hours, and Paradise is 99 miles from Seattle, so a day trip works well with an early start.

The usual route runs south through the Tacoma area to Ashford and the Nisqually Entrance on the south-west side of the park. From the entrance it is 19 miles more to Paradise, past Longmire and a string of roadside waterfalls. Count on at least four hours of driving for the round trip, then as much time in the park as daylight allows.

There is no public transport into the park. Without a car, the options are a guided tour or a hiker shuttle.

Which Mount Rainier entrance is best from Seattle?

The Nisqually Entrance. It is the most direct from Seattle, it leads to Paradise, and it is the entrance open all year.

The park has five entrances. Nisqually, in the south-west, is open year-round, and in winter the NPS says vehicle access is available only from Nisqually. White River, in the north-east, normally leads to Sunrise, but in 2026 Sunrise Road is closed to private vehicles for the rest of the season after the Grand Park 2 fire. Stevens Canyon and Chinook Pass are seasonal, and there is no public road access to Carbon River and Mowich Lake since the Fairfax Bridge closed permanently in April 2025.

Can you drive up to the top of Mount Rainier?

No. The highest point you can reach by vehicle is Sunrise at 6,400 ft, per the NPS, and in 2026 its road is closed to private vehicles. Paradise, at 5,400 ft, is the high point on the Nisqually side.

The summit is 14,410 ft (the NPS figure) and is reached only by climbing, with a permit, rope skills and the annual climbing fee. Roads stop far below the glaciers. What can you see at Mount Rainier in one day?

On the Nisqually side: old forest at Longmire, Christine Falls and Narada Falls beside the road, then the meadows, short trails and glacier views at Paradise.

Christine Falls (60 ft) is 4.5 miles from Longmire toward Paradise. Narada Falls (168 ft) is a roadside stop 3 miles below Paradise. At Paradise, the paved walk to Myrtle Falls is 1 mile round trip with about 100 ft of gain, and the Nisqually Vista loop is 1.2 miles. What should you know before driving to Mount Rainier yourself?

Fill up before you go, bring a card for the entrance pass, carry tire chains from November 1 to May 1, and arrive early for parking.

• No gas in the park: the NPS says gas is not available inside the park. There is EV charging at Longmire and Paradise.
• Entrance pass: every visitor needs one, and the park takes cards only at entrances.
• No timed entry in 2026: no reservation is needed anywhere in the park this year. The park advises arriving before 7 AM or after 4 PM, and on weekdays, to find parking.
• Tire chains: required in every vehicle from November 1 to May 1.
• Winter: the gate at Longmire closes nightly, and the road to Paradise opens each day only when conditions allow.
• Food: the Paradise Camp Deli is open through October 12 in 2026; the National Park Inn at Longmire is generally open all year.

Should you drive yourself or take a guided tour?

Drive if you want a long hike, a very early start or a flexible day. Take a tour if you have no car, want a guide, or would rather not drive mountain roads in winter.

Driving gives you the most time on the trail: you can be at Paradise before the lots fill and walk the full Skyline loop. A tour removes the driving, the parking and the entrance pass, and in winter some listings include snowshoes. The trade-off is time: the tour listings show a drive of about two to two and a half hours each way, and they plan anything from light walking to two guided hikes.

Group size matters too. The listings range from a five-person trail day to a 22-seat minibus.

Mount St. Helens is about 50 miles from Rainier. Its eruption on May 18, 1980 removed the top 1,300 ft of the summit.
